Sometimes the best way to shift your feelings in the moment is very simply: smile. This week when you find yourself feeling down or irritated, stop, take a few deep breaths and smile.
It can be really difficult at first. We can be so absorbed with the emotion at hand, that putting a smile on is like trying to lift 100 pounds when you can’t lift 50. That’s where a pause with a couple of focused breaths comes in. It allows you to move your focus from your feelings to your breathing. And, then smile.
This is a kindness practice for yourself and those close to you. It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the stress of constant close quarters and this practice can help you avoid words and actions you may regret later.
